KICKS 4 KENYA

My computer is temporarily working so I thought I would take this rare opportunity to write about a wonderful organization that I am working with called Kicks 4 Kenya.

Kicks 4 Kenya has graciously donated a bunch of soccer equipment to my school.  Earlier this week we started practicing with some of the balls and cones that we’re donated by Kicks 4 Kenya.  The students were thrilled to play with the new balls and even the neighboring school wanted to join in on the fun. When we initially went out to practice the entire school followed as well as all of the students from the hearing primary school…there must have been 300 students circled around me.

Thanks to TJ at Kicks 4 Kenya and all of those who made contributions to our little soccer project.  I greatly appreciate your efforts and I will be sure to keep you updated as the school year progresses.  We are preparing for the Deaf Schools competition in early April.  I am hopeful with the addition of the equipment that we will be ready to compete!

  1. Hi, Matt,
My name is Yvette Hohler.Have had a connection to Meru since ‘75-’76, when my husband and I taught at Gikumene Secondary(then a harambee school).Since 2005, the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Home, directed by our former Gikumene student Joseph Kirima Rwito, who is now Headmaster of The Meru Primary School, has been our main interest. We care for 59 former street children at The Home, and they appear to be thriving. Each February since ‘05,we visit “our”children with a group of supporters to check on how things are going and make plans for continued progress for the next year.In NY we have an incorporated 501 C3 (non profit)that fundraises for The Home and finds mentors for the children. We will be in Meru this year from Feb.14th thru 26th with a group of 15,including 4 high school students from the Shoreham-Wading River area of Long Island. Also coming along with us for the 2nd time,Dr.Craig Lehmann,Dean of the School of Health Sciences at SUNY Stony Brook, who is working on starting up a distance diagnostics program via Kenya Methodist University and local hospitals.Would love to have the opportunity to meet with you sometime during our stay. The young people in our group may have an interest in future Peace Corps work & perhaps you can inspire them. We’ll be staying at the Blue Towers Hotel in Meru during the above-mentioned dates. Do you think there’s a chance we can meet, share a meal,or some such?If your computer is up and running well, check out our website:www.hopechildrensfund.org.

  2. Now THIS is what I’m talking about!

Also, are you good at soccer? No offense or anything but I’ve never seen you play soccer; maybe these kids should be teaching you. It matters not, when you get back we’re forming an intramural soccer team. It’s already been settled; we’ll have a lucrative sponsorship from either P-Jobbs or Palma’s Pub, whoever made their first million the fastest.
