This is really happening…

Well, I do not have much time.  We are about to get on a bus and head to JFK where we will depart for Amsterdam this evening.  For all of you wondering when I will be in Kenya, it should be around noon central time on Thursday.  This of course, will be after two 8 to 9 hour flights.  However, I was told that I will be included in a small group that gets to stay in a hotel for the first week in Kenya.  So that is good news, I think.  After that week I will be with a homestay family for the rest of the training period (about two months).

Yesterday all 45 or so of us volunteers heading to Kenya arrived in Philly for or staging event.  This is just a brief one day orientation to get us in the right mindset for the next 27 months.  While, it was relatively boring, it was exciting to meet the rest of my group.  There is a variety of individuals here.  There is the recently retired attorney of twenty something years and the older lady who sold her veterinarian practice to become a volunteer.  Of course there are a handful of volunteers around my age who have recently finished college.  Everyone seems great.  Thankfully, most of the deaf education volunteers do not know that much sign language either.  I just realized that I should at some point explain what exactly the deaf education program is.  I will get to all of that as soon as I have a better idea of what I will be doing.
